Jenny Scott (she/her)
MSW, LCSW
Hello and Welcome!
I’m Jenny, a born-and-raised St. Louisan and natural born helper. I have been in the field of mental health and social work since 2008. I have served women seeking reproductive health services, the substance abuse population, the student populations at Saint Louis University, and now, the general St. Louis public. I am inspired by working with all types of individuals, seeing them achieve their goals, and helping alleviate emotional pain. It is through my experiences over the last ten plus years that I have cultivated an approach to therapy that both validates the whole person while challenging them to see things differently. I approach my work the same way I approach life, by grounding myself in reality. In doing so, we can weed out the unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that cause unnecessary pain and suffering. Our goal together will be to change the unhelpful ways in which we see the world by seeing what is actually in front of us and uniting our reality with our emotional intuition.
Outside of Work
When I’m not in the office providing services, I am out pursuing my other life’s passions. I enjoy practicing yoga and spending time outside. I also like to cook and bake in my kitchen when I have the time. To relax, I watch the same tv shows I’ve been watching for years (Michael Schur comedies are my favorite) and I also play video games and watch new shows with my husband.
A majority of my time, though, is spent with my pets. Henry, in addition to being a therapy dog, participates in agility leagues so we are often going to practice. At the house, I spend time with my two cats, Grandma and Daniel, and with the dogs. I am also a part-time puppy foster with Stray Rescue.
Background
I have always cared about people and how they feel. I remember my surprising my mom when I was a child with my curiosity of peoples stories. I always wanted to know how someone came to be in whatever position they were in and I always wanted to know if they were happy.
Fast forward to when I graduated from Washington University in Saint Louis with my undergraduate degree, I knew I wanted to help people and I just didn’t know how. So I used my success as a college athlete to help me get a job as a swim coach at Oberlin College so I could take my time and figure out what was next.
What was next was getting my MSW from WashU and utilizing that degree to work with people struggling with alcohol and drug dependency. After four years, I moved on to work in the counseling department at Saint Louis University. In my post-graduate work, I acquired skills for effective treatment approaches to depression and anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and crisis management in both the individual and group setting.
By 2019, I was ready for my next step and I founded Grounded Counseling with the hopes of expanding my scope of therapy and making it as approachable as possible to the people I serve. With a blend of humor, compassion, and authenticity, we will work together to identify what is holding you back from experiencing life as it should be: full of ups and downs but nothing that is insurmountable.
